January 10, 1975 – Jan. 27 is the date in 1950 when Ouray City Hall was almost totally destroyed by fire of undetermined origin that broke out late that night and left only three walls standing of the municipal building. Many remember, and many actually participated in the incredible efforts of the community that resulted in the reconstruction of City Hall as it stands today. But funds and people just didn't stretch quite far enough to replace the ornate original miniature Independence Hall facade facsimile on the structure. That project has been undertaken by a committee of volunteers who, with other volunteers, chose it as a major project in observance of Ouray's Centennial in 1976, coinciding with the Colorado Centennial and the nation's Bicentennial.
