Editor’s note: The Ouray County Plaindealer started publishing profiles of nonprofits between Thanksgiving and New Year’s in 2020 as a community service.
The purpose of these profiles is to highlight the meaningful work being performed by these organizations and let the community know how they can help them even more, as the holidays approach and we reach the end of 2024. Nonprofit organizations that are based in Ouray County and serve Ouray County are eligible for these profiles.
Year established as a nonprofit: 2000
What does your organization do for Ouray County?
The local chapter of the national Threshold Choir, the Threshold Singers of the Shining Mountains, sings songs of comfort to people on the threshold of life.
Those include hospice patients, through Hope West, and others who may be ill or homebound. In addition to the many songs written especially for the choir, when appropriate, we sing more lively songs including many old favorites. We love music and especially our threepart harmony.
We will sing at private homes, assisted living facilities or hospitals or for other special occasions such as Neighbor to Neighbor luncheons and memorial services.
We are not associated with any religion. Our members are about equally divided between Ouray and Montrose counties. We welcome new singers and requests for us to sing. There is no charge.
What do you list as your greatest accomplishments in 2024?
We have been inspired by the reactions of people we
have sung for, especially those with memory loss who perk up and even sing along with old favorite songs.
What are some goals or projects you have planned for 2025?
We hope to make our services better known, and sing as much as possible.
