HILLS OF GOLD
Erin McIntyre — Ouray County Plaindealer
The fall colors are spectacular on Red Mountain south of Ouray and across the San Juans. This photo shows the golden aspen trees on the hillside above some historic remains of the Larson Brothers Mine near Ironton, a once-booming mi ning town with a population of around 1,000 in the summers in the mid-1880s. The town declined after silver prices plummeted in 1893. By 1963, Ironton had a population of one – a man named Milton Larson.
