Dear Editor: I want to thank the county road department for the dust control method used this year on County Roads 23 and 17. The new material works very well and seems quite durable. I was somewhat concerned with the county road supervisor’s proposal to gravel the roads and not use dust control measures. Gravel is better than native soil, no doubt. However, many of Ouray County’s roads are gravel and can be extremely dusty which has negative effects on humans, livestock and forage vegetation. Gravel does degrade over time, resulting into more dust and gravel and is also notorious for washboard road surface. Both 23 and 17 are now used heavily by walkers, runners, bicycles, etc. as Ouray County has become a recreation destination county. Road design and dust mitigation should take all users into account.
