Dear Editor: After reading about the challenges faced by the Ouray Police Department, it sure seems to make sense to me to consolidate the policing in Ouray County under one agency. This would include the Sheriff's Office, the city of Ouray and the town of Ridgway. There has to be a lot of redundancy between these departments that could be eliminated. The management could be overseen by a police commission similar to Land Use with representation from Ouray, Ridgway and the county. The “Chief” would be the sheriff with assistant chiefs, one for Ridgway and one for Ouray. Since Ouray is now without a chief, this would be an opportune time to do this.
