Falls a natural marvel and tribute to pathfinder
The mineral rush was on! Prospectors found gold, silver and other mineral deposits in the northern San Juan Mountains in the years following the Civil War. The historic Red Mountain Mining District exploded onto the scene in 1882 with the Yankee Girl Mine. One year later 40 mines were operating successfully in the district. The region was experiencing a population boom, and mining camps named Red Mountain Town, Guston and Ironton serviced the mines.
