June 27, 1974 – Michael Bolger, age 15, of Alexandria, Louisiana, was killed Monday when he fell while climbing Mount Sneffels south of Ouray. His body was found early Tuesday this week, within 300 yards of the spot where Thomas L. Mourey of Montrose fell, suffering severe injuries, a week ago Sunday. Bolger had been climbing Sneffels with three companions, Jonathan Koehler, 17; Emmett Gray, 17; and a brother, Steven Bolger, 18, all of Alexandria. According to Ouray County Sheriff Art Dougherty, the boys were climbing the northeast side of Sneffels and were about 50 feet from the summit of the 14,143-foot mountain, when Michael slipped while chopping footholds in the ice. He fell down a snow chute, rolling and bouncing approximately 1,800 feet. Koehler walked out to the Camp Bird Mine for help, and the Sheriff’s Department was notified of the accident by Lee Richardson, wife of the watchman at the mine, at about 4 p.m.
