May 2, 1974 - Ouray County Sheriff Art Dougherty received information last Thursday from the Montrose Sheriff’s Dept. that there was a possibility of bombs planted in Ouray in the Ouray County Courthouse, the home of Judge George Kempf and the home of State Highway Patrolman James Rupe. Dougherty – assisted by Montrose Sheriff Tom Gillmore, Ouray Sheriff’s Deputy Frank Merling, Ouray Police Chief Keith Kelley, Police Deputy Jim McGuire, State Patrolman Rupe and Sheriff’s Deputy Bill Hotchkiss – searched all of the buildings and tracked down leads. Nothing was found. They staged an all-night surveillance, but the suspects involved never were seen in Ouray. According to information from the Montrose Sheriff’s Dept., the Montrose County Courthouse and Judge Kempf’s home there were also supposed to have been bombed. Both sheriff’s departments and police are still investigating.
