Dear Editor: I have spent years supporting sexual assault victims who were forced to bear the brutal weight of legal and social systems immediately upon simply reporting what happened to them. Or, in the case of minors the mandated report made by hospital staff while being treated for their injuries. The caption and image of last week's cartoon was an absurd misattribution of burden. It is not a burden for "Ouray" (as represented by a hapless, middle aged man in a suit???) that the "rape incident" "won't go away". It is a responsibility to all of us in Ouray County (of many and varied human attributes) to make sure our community is a healthy & safe environment for all. Your gorilla should have represented the massive burden that rape culture puts on those who are assaulted, not the citizens who have to "put up" with its coverage.
