March 7, 1974 - Deep snow and cold have placed Ouray County deer and elk under severe stress this winter, according to Jim Olterman, wildlife conservation officer at Ridgway. Some deer losses have occurred mostly in the very young and very old age groups. Elk are wintering well in most areas, Olterman said. Two elk have been stranded by deep snow in Ironton Park and are being fed. Due to the poor condition of these animals, snowmobilers are urged to refrain from operating in the area. Automobiles continue to take a heavy toll on deer. During the winter of 1972-73, a total of 287 deer were killed between Colona and Ouray on Highway 550. So far this winter, approximately 75 deer have been killed on the same stretch of road. As the valley area greens up in the spring, deer will be drawn to the meadows along the highway and the chances for deer-auto accidents will increase. Dog owners are requested to make sure that their animals are not allowed to roam free. Deer cannot survive even a short chase at this time of the year.
