A 31-year-old Montrose man died after a two-vehicle crash near Billy Creek State Wildlife Area on Tuesday night.
Candelario Bustmente Espinosa was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, according to Ouray County Coroner Glenn Boyd. He was the only person in his vehicle.
Two others were taken to the hospital as a precaution but were not injured.
The accident is under investigation, and involved a pickup pulling a box trailer heading south on U.S. Highway 550 and the vehicle driven by Espinosa, which was headed north toward Montrose.
According to information from an online fundraiser for Espinosa, the 31-year-old was a father of three for whom he was the main financial provider. Candelario, or “Candy” as he was known, was driving home from work when the accident occurred.Cecilia Castro wrote on GoFundMe. “Heaven has gained an amazing person who will be missed more than any words could explain.” The fundraiser has raised more than $5,000 in less than one day.
“If you had the honor of meeting him you know he had the biggest heart and was always willing to help anyway he could,”The highway was closed for hours due to the accident investigation – until after 1 a.m. Wednesday.
The accident and cause of death are under investigation, and an autopsy is pending.
No other details about the accident were immediately available. The Colorado State Patrol did not respond to a request for information by early Wednesday afternoon.
