A sport-utility vehicle driver who tried to illegally pass several vehicles on a snowy and icy U.S. Highway 550 south of Colona triggered a four-vehicle accident on Jan. 18. The driver of that SUV died in the accident, and investigators and first responders shut down the highway for several hours.

The man who died, 27-year-old Ivan Alejandro Luera-Gurerro, was staying in Montrose but is from Zacatecas, Mexico, Ouray County Coroner Glenn Boyd said.
