Fort Uncompahgre: The place to swap
Fort Uncompahgre was THE place on the Western Slope from 1828 until 1844. Like many “forts” in the West, including Bent’s Fort in southeastern Colorado, this wasn’t a military installation. It was a trading post where one could stock up on needed supplies, sell furs and hides, buy livestock and guns, and even catch up on local gossip. Although the original location for Fort Uncompahgre isn’t precisely known, it is believed to have been located just west of the current town of Delta.
