GUNNISON
On Aug. 9, the Gunnison Watershed School District Board unanimously voted to proceed with asking voters to approve a $95 million bond measure this fall to fund district-wide improvements that include addressing overcrowding at the Crested Butte Community School and creating better security systems at all schools. The bond proposal includes funding for projects at all of the district’s schools — Lake Preschool, Crested Butte and Gunnison Community Schools, Gunnison High School and Marble Charter School — placing priority on safety improvements, relieving overcrowding in the North Valley and building maintenance. About 42% of the total cost is for Gunnison schools, while 58% is for adding 13 classrooms at CBCS. If passed, the bond would cost residential property owners approximately $183 per year or $15 each month for every $500,000 of assessed value. The $95 million price tag, which has increased by $6 million since July to account for rising interest rates, reflects reductions in the project’s scope, taking into account community feedback gathered last year.
SILVERTON
On Aug. 4, Leo Lloyd unexpectedly passed away at the age of 60 from a heart condition while mountain biking in Durango with his son. Leo was a mentor to countless San Juan County residents since the 1980s. He gave countless mentoring hours and time to area EMS and search and rescue team members. The void that our community will feel with his passing is immeasurable. He was a member of Silverton’s Ambulance Service, our Search and Rescue team and had been serving with us for over 20 years. Leo was a respected paramedic and nurse, serving on ground and air ambulances during his career, but it was his expertise in mountain rescue where he shined brightest.
LAKE CITY
In the wake of installing a $52,654 precast concrete outhouse at a new location overlooking Peninsula Park at Lake San Cristobal, Hinsdale County commissioners spent a considerable portion of the workshop portion of their Aug. 3 meeting discussing potential acquisition of additional outhouses. Up to $61,000 was budgeted for the new Peninsula Park two-room toilet, which was hoisted into place earlier this summer. The new toilet with double vault is located on the dry hillside overlooking the county boatdock and replaces the former boat dock toilet.
