Marie Scott, Ridgway’s ranching royalty
Marie Scott (1896-1979) owned land (lots of it). She was a local rancher whose holdings stretched from Ridgway all the way into southeastern Utah. Long-time residents describe her as a land baron, a force of nature, and a shrewd dealmaker.
Marie’s ranch lands were located in Ouray, San Miguel, and Montrose counties and at one point were estimated to have been 100,000 acres. She also had over 1,000 “white-faced” Herefords and hundreds of sheep.
