The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests’ Ouray Ranger District is seeking public comments on a project to close or modify entrances to six inactive mines along Engineer Pass southeast of Ouray.

The closures of the entrances, all of which are within 1,000 feet of the road, will eliminate high-risk safety hazards to recreational visitors while preserving natural and cultural resources, according to the Forest Service.
