Off-roaders shift gears for 550 closures

Local Jeep tour and off-road rental companies are shifting schedules and canceling tours to deal with the impacts the closure of Highway 550 at Red Mountain Pass will have on their businesses.

The highway will be closed to allow San Miguel Power Association to reconstruct its power lines over Red Mountain Pass. The project requires vegetation to be removed from the mountainsides, and a helicopter to help remove that vegetation. This requires the highway to be closed for safety reasons.
