A man convicted of sexual assault almost 20 years ago is asking a Ouray County judge to allow him to stop registering as a sex offender.

Terry McGowan was arrested in 2002 after a girl reported she had been molested by him several times when she was between 5 and 8 years old.

According to the affidavit for McGowan’s arrest, the girl told investigators she had been on trips with McGowan and was molested when she was trying to sleep in the sleeper cab of a truck.
