In first presidential primary in 20 years, Ouray County turnout exceeds state’s

Ouray County voters participated in their first presidential primary in two decades, with more than half the registered voters in the county casting ballots. More than 55 percent of registered voters in the county cast ballots here, higher than the statewide voter turnout rate of 40 percent.

Poor turnout in presidential primary races in 1996 and 2000 led the state to eliminate presidential primary races until voters approved Colorado joining Super Tuesday’s election with 13 other states.
