After the morning work session, it will be time to "Ride the RAT," said RAT member Brian Scranton. "We will break into rider groups based on skill level. Everyone is welcome to ride." Bike demos and maintenance will also be available.
Three time World Mountain Biking Champion Sara Ballantyne and four-time Leadville Trail 100 Champion Laurie Brandt will also be leading a skills clinic in Hartwell Park from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Ballantyne, who taught the clinic last year by herself, is excited to have Brandt's help this year which will allow for the instruction of smaller groups. Ballantyne advises participants to have their bikes in good working order for the clinic.
Riders will reconvene at Hartwell Park at 3 p.m. for lunch from True Grit Cafe and beer from New Belgium and Colorado Boy. A silent auction will feature mountain bike gear, various adventure gear and local vacation accommodations, including National Forest Service yurt stays and condos in Telluride. Live music will be provided by Joint Point, performing on the new stage.
At 7 p.m., a live auction to benefit RAT programs will include a cruiser bike, donated by Boot Doctors and Paragon Outdoors of Telluride, and a mountain bike, donated by Ridgway Outdoor Experience.
Scranton predicts new trail construction supported by RAT fest not only will provide recreational opportunities for local residents but will have economic benefits in the form of tourism dollars, similar to the mountain biking hotspots of Fruita, Colo. or Moab, Utah.
On May 10, the BLM Uncompahgre Field Office gave final approval to the Ridgway Comprehensive Travel Management Plan submitted by RAT and Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association, Inc. (COPMOBA). This approval opened a 1200 acre parcel two miles northeast of Ridgway for trail construction. Trail construction will be completed incrementally over the five year project, but RAT hopes to complete as many as 10 miles of trails this year.
"The weather is looking great," remarked Scranton. "It's going to be really fun."
