WESTERN SLOPE: Annual river float raises funds for restoration E-mail

Early on a Saturday morning, hundreds of Colorado residents and visitors attended the Western Slope Conservation Center’s annual River Awareness Float Trip Fundraiser.
The 14th annual event, held May 18, included a float down the Gunnison River in the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area.
“I thought it was a blast,” said WSCC executive director Sarah Sauter. “Every year is a lot of fun. It was fun to get on a different stretch of the river.”

CITY OF OURAY: Police department loses another officer E-mail

Following a series of resignations that began early last week, Ouray’s police department is now down to one.
Officer Chad Rilling submitted his letter of resignation before Monday evening’s city council meeting. His leave was to take effect Wednesday, May 22, which is also the last day for Officer Tony Schmidt.
Last Monday, Schmidt handed in his resignation. He told the Plaindealer that he felt there were some issues within the department that weren’t being resolved and mentioned that recent scheduling issues also came into play with his decision. Police chief Leo Rasmusson II followed suit and resigned Tuesday morning, May 14.
Justin Crandall, the only remaining officer, spoke to city council and the community at Monday’s Ouray City Council meeting. He stated that with the current state of the department, some services will be curtailed for the moment, including...

Goose No. 4 ends respite in Ridgway E-mail

Galloping Goose No. 4 is back in Telluride after undergoing four years of restoration in the capable hands of Ridgway Railroad Museum volunteers. On May 16, a major operation loaded the Goose on a flat bed and transported it to its home at the Telluride Volunteer Fire Department.
The operation required that the tracks where the Goose sat at the museum be lifted in a gradual arc to meet the tracks on the end of the flat bed. Skanska USA, a national construction firm, provided transportation at no cost.

OURAY COUNTY: Jeep roads quickly opening up for the season E-mail

Off-road enthusiasts can start hitting the trails now that Jeep roads have officially begun opening up for the summer.
The Ouray County Road and Bridge crew started plowing the roads earlier this month and is getting through more quickly than usual.
“Progress is good, it’s going really well,” said Road and Bridge Supervisor Chris Miller. “We’re pretty far ahead of schedule right now.”
