Chance Ronemus, 16, of Ridgway summited the nearly 3,000-foot El Capitan rock formation in Yosemite National Park on June 11 after three days and two nights of climbing that included a sizable fall from a leading position.
Ronemus will be a senior at Ridgway Secondary School next year.
"It definitely started to drag on," said Ronemus. "It was hard, but it was really cool."
In preparation for the climb, he gained experience as a member of the Ridgway climbing team as well as a day of big wall training made possible by the George Gardiner Scholarship Fund.
Ascending "The Nose" route, a classic climb on the protruding southern extent of the famous granite rock, Ronemus was joined by fellow climber Alex Young of Boulder.
